Just wanted to let you know how much i enjoy using the dino-lite digital microscope for my coins. I've been telling other people out there that if you've been thinking about getting the dino-lite, please don't wait like I did. It makes checking coins so much easier and that it is a must for those people who sell coins on ebay.
THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!

Counterfeit Inspection Training.
BigC recently had the opportunity to participate in a counterfeit inspection training seminar put together as a joint effort of the California Space Authority and the Independent Distributors of Electronics Association. The seminar included a lab segment which used Dino-Lite digital microscopes to demonstrate techniques for identifying counterfeit parts.
The Problem
Modern electronics contain dangerous substances like mercury, lead, and cadmium that require them to be disposed of in special ways. While many countries have made efforts to promote e-waste recycling programs, operators of these programs do not always live up to their promises for safe and environmentally friendly disposal. In many cases, e-waste “recyclers” have been discovered to be illegally exporting old components to Southeast Asia where entire villages have sprung up around the industry of stripping parts from obsolete products and turning them into counterfeits. These villages have little to no means to provide for the safety of their workers, the environment, or their products. All too often, parts are simply melted to recover small amounts of gold, releasing other substances like mercury into the environment. Circuit boards and microchips are washed in rivers and painted over with brand names and new manufacture dates. Eventually, these parts find their way back to the U.S. and Europe, where uninformed distributors are putting them back into the marketplace. These counterfeit chips ultimately end up in products ranging from toys, to military, aerospace, and life support systems.
The Dino-Lite Solution
It is easy to understand how electronic components that have been recycled, washed in a river, painted over as a counterfeit and packaged without regard to humidity or electrostatic discharge, then shipped back to the U.S., would not be desirable in our nation’s telecommunications systems, military equipment, and hospitals. Amazingly, despite how little care is given to the actual quality of these parts, counterfeiters have become quite skilled in making the parts appear legitimate. Fortunately, with Dino-Lite and a little training, it is also easy to identify these dangerous parts and prevent them from ever entering the distribution cycle. Examining a suspect part under a Dino-Lite makes it simple to identify common indicators of a counterfeit component which are often impossible to distinguish with the naked eye. Common indicators visible under magnification include bent or missing pins, corrosion, small scratches, inconsistencies in texture, and low quality printing. Special Dino-Lite models with built-in polarized lighting can sometimes even detect original markings without removing the counterfeit resurfacing. Preventing the distribution of counterfeit parts is of vital interest to our economy and our national security. The Independent Distributors of Electronics Association is working hard to inform and educate American companies on this subject, and BigC is proud to a be part of the solution.

Nailfold capillary microscopy.
Nailfold capillary microscopy examination has been used since late 1950s as a non-invasive technique for diagnosing and monitoring connective tissue disease in adults. Certain diseases cause permanent changes to the shapes and densities of nailfold capillaries and therefore nailfold capillary microscopy examination is important for diagnosing and monitoring these diseases. Diseases such as Primary Raynaud’s phenomenon, progressive systemic sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis were detected in more than 80% of adult patients, by analyzing high resolution images.
The use of the Dino-Lite handheld digital nailscope can help aid in capillary microscopy examination. The ability to zoom at 500x magnification, and the ability to save images in high resolution up to 1280x 1024, can provide much needed help in the detection and prevention of connective tissue diseases.

Dangers of Fake and Counterfeit Components.
Just like many other thing electronics in today's world, computer components are targets of fakes and counterfeiting. Though it may seem harmless and to some even cost effective, the use of these counterfeit components cause a huge risk. All sorts of commercial and military craft rely heavily on these components, such as commercial airliners, war planes, helicopters, war ships, even missiles, and so on. The failure of such components could lead to catastrophic consequences. Counterfeit routers are another issue as these fakes could lead to foreign espionage or accidents. Many fakes are purchased by companies where employees sand off markings on used commercial chips and re-label them as military.
Detecting these fakes become more important every day. The use of Dino-Lite handheld digital microscopes can aid in the detection of counterfeit products. The ability to zoom in from 10X-200X magnification with a digital zoom up to 330X, and with white, near UV, IR, LED lights or polarized lights provide much needed inspection help even to the trained eye.

From a firearms expert's point of view, the "Dino-Lite" model AM313FVT UV
allows particles of gun powder to show up clearly even against a black or dark background
because of the ultraviolet lighting.

I purchased the Dino-Lite AM313 Digital Microscope in March of this year for use in cataloging my coin collection. I use a coin inventory management application that supports storing up to 6 images per coin and I wanted a way to easily capture a variety of images for each of my coins. I own a couple of digital cameras and was in the process of researching the purchase of a new macro lens for this purpose when I came across an advertisement for the Dino-Lite. It appeared to be the perfect fit for what I needed and at a cost that was about 1/3 of what a new macro lens was going
to cost.
I want to tell you how pleased I am with the Dino-Lite and the accompanying DinoCapture software. Installation and setup was quick and easy and I was able to begin capturing coin images immediately. The quality of the images with the default settings was great but after playing around with lighting and the wide array of video settings in the application I was able to capture even better images. This is truly a perfect product at a perfect price. |

bigC - Portable Digital Microscope
I'm a geek... a big one... I admit it... so perhaps it is no
surprise that I was instantly attracted to a little kiosk that was
showing off portable digital microscopes.
The Dino-Lite series of digital
microscope/camera's from BigC.com may seem like simple gadgets but they are all professional in their
capabilities. The above pictures give a reasonable picture of the
types of images that can be obtained from their self-illuminated
microscope. In addition to clear still shots, the Dino-Lite
microscopes can take video at up to 30fps. Plus, you can adjust
the
magnification from 10x-200x with continuous zoom and output to either
a USB or composite interface.

I have been a coin dealer for almost 25 years now and I spend a
good deal of my time examining a variety of coins in great
detail. The value of collectible coins is determined by many
factors and are "graded" based on the condition of the coin. The
DINO-LITE allows me to closely examine and either determine or
verify the condition and grade of these coins and to send the
magnified images to my customers in real time! This way the
customers and other dealers can make purchasing decisions without
having to send the coins all over the country for inspection.
Recently, I was able to almost double my money on a coin purchase
by sending the magnified images to another dealer who then
determined that my coin had been improperly "graded". He offered
me almost twice my asking price! |
